Screening of microorganisms for control of Aspergillus flavus Link., aflatoxin producing fungus in corn

After 5 days of incubation, all of tested bacteria and L. plantarum failed to inhibit growth of A. flavus while seven isolates of yeasts were able to reduce the number of A. flavus infected grains as well as the density of A. flavus on grains. Two isolates of Candida sp. (number 1 and 4) showed similar efficacy as Torulopsis candida (isolates number 6 and 7). Average percentages of infected grains when applied with Candida sp. and T. candida were 11.25 and 12 whereas densities of A. flavus were 1.7 * 10 ** (4) and 1.2 * 10 ** (4) cfu/seed respectively. In the control, 100 % of infected grains could be detected with average density of A. flavus on grains was 7.4 * 10 ** (5) cfu/seed. Aflatoxin contaminations in grains applied with Candida sp. and T. candida were 243 and 78 ppb which were significantly lower as compared with 2,154 ppb in the control. Candida sp. and T. candida were applied on corn grains with 26 - 27 % moisture content in order to determine the suppressive period. Both yeasts could suppress the growth of A. flavus within 10 days. At 10 days after application, percentages of A. flavus detected grains were 62.5 93 and 100 when corn grains were applied with Candida sp., T. candida and controls respectively.
