Effect of foliar fertilizers on nutritional contents and flowering of two mango cultivars

Foliar application of monopotassiumphosphate (0-52-34; MPP) at the concentrations of 0 2500 and 5000 ppm in the middle of October followed by the 7-13-34 + 12.5 Zn (NK) at 0 1250 and 2500 ppm in the beginning of November were conducted on two mango cultivars, the 'Nam Dok Mai' and 'Raad' 3 times at 7 days interval. The objective of the study was to determine leaf nutritional contents and flowering ability. The results showed that trees treated with MPP and NK tended to have a greater flowering percentage as well as its panicle size. MPP 5000 ppm with NK 2500 ppm provided the highest flowering percentage in both cultivars, 87.5 and 78.1 % comparing with the control trees of 24.6 and 10.4 % for 'Nam Dok Mai' and 'Raad' respectively. Leaf TNC and TNC/TN ratio showed an increasing trend along with the increasing MPP concentrations. Higher tendency, of these two characters, than the control trees was obtained after 2 NK applications. The TNC content exhibited a very high relationship with flowering. Both formulae have no effect on the leaf TN and K contents. However, the P content increased along with NK concentrations after just one application in 'Nam Dok Mai' but three applications in 'Raad'. The leaf Zn content showed much greater amount, distinctively, with the NK concentration and number of application. No effect on fruit set received from the MPP treated trees but the NK did have on 'Nam Dok Mai'. Both formulae had shown an interaction on the increasing fruit weight especially at higher concentrations. Nonthelees, the climatic influence, especially the chilling temperature, also shown on interaction with foliar fertilizers.
