Fuel characteristics in dry dipterocarp forest at Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, Chieng Mai

Study of Fuel characteristics in Dry Dipterocarp Forest was conducted in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, Chieng Mai during the period of November 1991 to May 1992 by laying out 780 of 1x1 m2 plots in the study area. The results showed that litter was the main fuel type of the area while the second important fuel type was grass. Undergrowth and dry twig were less significant in the area. Average loads of fuel during fire season was 5,190 kg/ha. This was composed of 1,980 kg of litter, 1,480 kg of grass, 1,070 kg of undergrowth and 660 kg of twig. the accumulation of fuel reach its maximum load in March and April. Fuel dispersal of litter, grass, undergrowth and twig were 43 %, 31 %, 23 % and 8 % of the area respectively with the average fuel dispersal of 89 % of the area. Fuel covered 100 % of the area in March and April. Height of litter, grass, undergrowth and twig were 26, 20, 8 and 4 cm respectively which resulted in the average fuel height of 15 cm. There were 2 periods during fire season when fuel height reach its maximum which were in November-December and in February. Average fuel moisture content was 19 % with the lowest moisture content of 5 % in April. In this regard, relative humidity was a major factor affecting fuel moisture content.
