Effect of IBA and NAA on root seedling of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana Linn)

Ten treatments in completely randomized design (CRD) were used. Treatments (T) were as follows: IBA solution at concentrations of 100 (T2), 300 (T3) and 500 ppm. (T4): NAA at concentrations of 100 (T5), 300 (T6) and 500 ppm. (T7); and also IBA+NAA (mix) at 100(T8) 300(T9) and 500 ppm. (T10). The control (T1) was not treated with either IBA and NAA. The method of treatment was to submerge roots of mangosteen seedlings in respective solutions for five minutes, before planting them out in a sand:sandy loam (ratio 2:1) soil. After six months mangosteen seedling were lifted and examined. The number of roots and number of leaves were counted and root lengths measured. Results were as follows: the highest number of roots (16.11) were on plants: treated with IBA at 100 ppm. (T2); treatment IBA at 300 ppm. (T3) and treatment IBA+NAA (mix) at 100 ppm. (T8) had equal numbers of roots (14.66) and the lowest number of roots were on plants from treatment IBA at 500 ppm. (T4). However no significant different in numbers of roots between defferent treatment were found. No differences were found in numbers of leaves between different treatment and they are not relative the numbers of roots. Root lengths of mangosteen seedlings treated with NAA at concentration 100 ppm. (T5) were sianificantly longer (12.85 cm) than for seedling treated with IBA+NAA (mix) at 100 ppm (7.79 cm)
