Influence of the suspended sediment on the operation of irrigation systems

The investigation of the regime of suspended sediment transport in natural streams has considerable importance for the planning and development of the irrigation systems. When water, heavily laden with sediment, is diverted from a stream the influence of the sediment on the operation of the irrigation system has to be analysed in detail. Insufficient knowledge of the sediment regime in the river, or wrong estimation of sediment quantities diverted into the system by water can caused significant problems during the operation of the irrigation systems. The planning of the development of large irrigation systems along the Velika Morava river (Serbia, Yugoslavia) includes the irrigation of about 48000 ha with direct use of water from the river. On the basis of the measurements of the suspended sediment concentrations on the Velika Morava river and prediction of crop water requirements, the analysis of the sediment quantities which can enter into the irrigation systems was carried out.
