The subject matter of this paper is a generalization of experiences, resulting from long term work in this field of Energoprojekt Hydroengineering Consultants (Yugoslavia), dealing with applying the results of geological and geotechnical investigations of dam foundations in the relevant dam designs. After general consideration on geological and geotechnical properties of dam foundations, a condensed review of geotechnical investigation methods is given. Their application in the design of hydraulic structures is also considered. The cases of two large concrete dams are given. Besides, general considerations on dam engineering in karstic environment, derived from our rather large practice in this field, are exposed. On the basis of interaction links between the geological, hydrotechnical and geotechnical conditions, on one side, and the optimum dam design on the other sied, the final considerations stress the decisive importance of reliable determination of the above mentioned conditions as the basic requirement for preparation of a valid and successful dam design.
