Influence of Nimodipin on brain bioelectrical activity in cholesterol-fed rabbits

The calcium antagonists are very important drugs, successfully used in the therapy of various diseases. Nimodipin as a tissue specific drug for the brain, produces cerebral vasodilatation and an increase of of brain blood flow. Investigations were carried out on 2 cholesterol-fed Chinchilla rabbits. Electroencephalographic activity of the rabbit brain (cortex frontalis, temporalis and occipitalis, hippocampus and centrum medianum thalami) was registered by chronically implanted electrodes. Spontaneous activity showed signs of ischemica, caused by atherosclerosis. During the EEG registration Nimodipine was applied (0.1 mg/kg i.m.) and after about 10 minutes the signs of ischemia were evidently weaker. But, after 20-25 minutes spontaneous activity was re-established. These effects were probably the result of vasodilatation and prevention of calcium damage effects on the neuronal level
