The present study was undertaken in order to investigate the effect of nitric oxide precursor, L-arginine, on narcosis produced by acute ethanol intoxication. The present study revealed that nitric oxide precursor L-arginine injected intraperitoneally, could not affect ethanol-induced narcosis. Since L-arginine does not penetrate readily the hematoencephalic barrier, it is possible that the level of nitric oxide in the brain after i.p. injection of L-arginine is not changed. To investigate this hypothesis, further experiments with intracerebroventricularly injected L-arginine are needed
