The investigation was carried out on the dynamics of the organic production of grassland in three different height zones in Mount Stara Planina (Serbia, Yugoslavia), a region typical for hilly-mountain animal production in Serbia (Yugoslavia). The following zones were investigated: the zone of hilly grasslands - cutting meadow (Festuco pseudovinae - Agrostietum vulgaris type, 900 m alt.); zone of mountain grasslands characterized by a combined utilization (Agrostietum vulgaris type, 1200 m alt.); and zone of subalpine grassland-meadows (Nardetum strictae type, 1400 m alt.). The yield and quality of biomass were observed. The interaction between the altitude, productivity and quality of natural grasslands in Mount Stara Planina was established
