In 57 lakes situsted in 7 National parks of the former Yugoslavia, 27 species of algae belonging to 5 of 6 extant genera from the division of Charophyta have been recorded. National parks are truly the treasury of the diversity of Charophyta because even 71 of all Charophyta, recorded throughout the former Yugoslavia, grow on their territory. Compared to the neighbouring Balkan countries and some European, the former Yugoslavia is distinguished by its significant floristical diversity. Numerous protected habitats with clean and very transparent water exist only in the regions of National parks. In addition to widespread species, in National parks throughout the former Yugoslavia, exist also very rare species (Chara strigosa) and species new for science (Chara visianii). All investigated lakes belong to Chara-type except for Skadar Lake which belongs to Nitella-Tolypella-type of the lakes.
