The results of research on fertilization and reclamation of natural grassland in Montenegro [Yugoslavia]

Natural grassland cover about 446,000 ha in Montenegro (Yugoslavia) of which meadows account for 120,000 ha and pastures for 320,000 ha. As a prevailing category 86 of the agricultural land, grassland represents the main forage basis since it contributes 90 of total roughage producer. This paper presents the most significant results of investigation on the fertilization and reclamation of natural grassland in Montenegro. On the basis of these results, the following conclusions can be made: Grassland fertilization is an efficient measure which can increase the yield by 3-5 times, depending on the fertilization variant, type of grassland, the soil and climatic conditions. Nitrogen fertilizers show the biggest effect on the grass growing and the phosphorus once there is increased share of legumes in the grass cover. However, the highest yields were achieved by applying the complex (NPK) fertilizers, which are recommended for practical use as the best variant. Reclamation measures, especially fertilization, result in changes of floristic composition and thereby the chemical composition and quality of hay, increasing the content of proteins, mineral and fat substances and decreasing the content of cellulose and non-nitrogen extractive substances.
