The effect of clipping stage on yield of sweet potato (Ipomea batatas)

An experiment was carried out for three consecutive years (1989-91) at Bako to determine the effect of clipping stage on yields of sweet potato cultivars. Six clipping stages (2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5) and 5 months after planting) and two cultivars (white star and local variety) were considered. Randomized complete block design (RCB) in incomplete factoral arrangement was employed in four replications. Records were made on total and marketable root, and on fresh top part yields. Significant (P0.05) differences were observed between the cultivars in all traits studied except for fresh top part yield in 1991. In all testing years, dlipping stages markedly affected (P0.05) fresh top part yield. Singificant differences were also observed on marketable root yield in 1991 and on total yield in 1989 and 1991 among the different clipping stages. On the average, the improved cultivar out-performed the local counterpart at all clipping stages for total and marketable root yields, indicating that the cultivar x clipping stage interaction is not significant. Similarly, the local cultivar out yielded the improved variety in fresh top part yield. Generally, for both varieties root yields were superior for clipping at maturity or five months after planting.
