Relative importance of yield limiting factors in field pea

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the performance of field pea improved production practices in increasing field pea seed yield under different agronomic practices and to collect information on the interaction of factors using 2 the power of 5 fractional factorial arrangement in randomized complete block design in two replications at Holetta (1993-94 crop seasons). The factors tested were sowing date (15-30 June vs after 30 June of farmers), variety (G22763-2 vs local landrace), fertilizer (18kg N ha-1 and 46 kg P2O5 ha-1 vs no fertilizer), weed control (one hand weeding vs no weeding) and seed rate (150 kg ha-1 vs 100 kg ha-1) with or without pre-sowing tillage. Aveeraged over years, there was statistically significant (p less than or equal to 0.01) response to variety, fertilizer and plowing (p less than or equal two 0.1) but not to the other factor and interaction of factors. Fertilizer, improved variety, plowing twice before planting and late sowing increased yield by 25, 20, 11 and 8 percent respectively. In 1994, seed yield, number of pods per plant and plant height significantly (p less than or equal to 0.01) more than in 1993. Plants were significantly taller due to early sowing, local landrace, fertilizer application and pre-sowing tillage. Number of pods per plant was significantly higher due to early sowing and fertilizer application while 1000 seed weight significantly increased due to improved variety, no weeding and lower plant propulation.
