Weed competition study on haricot bean in the sub-humid zone of Jima (Melko)

Weeds have a negative and significant impact for the farmers in bean growing areas in the sub-humid zone of Jima and Metu. An experiment was conducted between the 1993 and 1995 cropping seasons on a Nitosol. Improved (Roga-1) and local varieties (erect and bush types) were used. The main goal of this experiment was to determine the optimum weeding, to estimate the extent of yield loss due to weed competition, and to determine the critical period of weed competition on haricot bean. The highest crop loss and consequently the lowest mean yields ranged between 8.8-12.53 q/ha and were obtained from the weedy check as compared to treatment yield differences were observed from the weedy check as compared to treatments weeded once and twice 15, 30 and 15 and 45 DACE. Highly significant yield differences were observed between the two varieties and among different weeding management. Yield losses due to weed competition raged between 40 to 44.4 percent. Our findings suggest that the critical period for weed competition for haricot bean crop is within the first 2 to 4 weeks after crop emergence.
