Study on date of intercropping haricot bean in maize and sorghum at Bako

Two separate haricot bean (h. bean) intercropping experiments one with maize and the other with sorghum crops using different planting dates were conducted at Bako Research Center from 1982 to 1985. The aims were to determine appropriate date of intercropping h.bean in maize and sorghum and investigate the effects of the component crops on each other. The varieties were "Bako Composite" for maize, "Didessa 1057" for sorghum and "Black Dessie" for h.bean. there were five intercropping date treatments for planting h.bean. The dates began from the optimum date of planting the cereals. In the intercrop treatments the expected population of h.bean in maize and sorghum was 80,000 and 62,222 plants/ha which is 32 and 25 of the normal h.bean population respectively. the maize and sorghum were planted at the optimum time of planting and spacings. the design was randomized complete blocks (RCB) replicated three times. There was no significant effect on maize or sorghum yield due to intercropping h.bean at different planting dates. But h.bean yield was significantly affected. H.bean yield decreased as the time of intercropping was delayed. The semi-climbing nature of the h.bean inflicted lodging significantly in the maize but not in the sorghum; there was, however, less lodging in the intercropped sorghum treatments that in the sole sorghum. The highest green h.bean harvest was obtained when it was planted the same date with maize and sorghum.
