Three rice varieties (BR-1, BR-14 and Purbachi) were grown under three different soil water regimes, such as continuous flooding, alternate flooding and no flooding in a sandy loam soil to measure the influence of soil water regime on root growth of rice. Root length densities were measured at three different stages of rice root growth (45, 60 and 90 days after transplanting). Compared with no flooding, both alternate flooding and continuous flooding increased the density of rooting, leaf area index and grain yield.
