The drawing up by the three Regions of Belgium of a cooperation agreement with respect to the prevention and control of packaging waste is aimed at preventing and reducing the production or the effect on the environment of packaging waste and at increasing the share of reusable packagings and to reduce the total weight of one-way packagings. To reach these goals the Belgian government puts the persons in charge of packaging under a number of obligations: the obligation to draw up a prevention plan in which concrete measures are suggested to restrict the quantity and the effect on the environment; the obligation to take the packaging back so as to reach the percentages for recycling and useful applications of packaging waste and the obligation to provide information by which data in figures on packaging waste and the control of it are communicated to the authorities.
