Growing biocide crops in soils under set-aside conditions
1998
Bettini, G. (ANB, Bologna (Italy))
The main cause of the ground infestation of Heterodera schachtii was the rigid biannual rotation of beet and wheat crops over long periods, especially during the 1970's and 1980's. In Italian soils where there are over 100 egg-larvae per 100 g of earth (as established by laboratory tests for nematodes), the following species may be cultivated: Raphanus sativus spp. oleiformis and Sinapis alba. These cruciform species perform a pesticidal action against nematodes, thereby reducing infestation by approximately 55-60/. The establishment of the set-aside regime has given increased acceptance of alternating these crops. The present report gives the results of two years of experimental tests carried out on soils infested with nematodes.
