Determination of a model for estimating losses caused by the corn borers Sesamia nonagrioides (Lef.) and Ostrinia nubilalis Hueb. at Alentejo Portugal
1997
Pereira, M.M. (Escola Superior Agraria de Beja (Portugal))
The utilisation of simple, expeditious and strict methods to quantify the losses caused by pests are an important factor to the development of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). In this paper are presented the methodology used by the author for the determination of a descriptive model of losses caused by the two species of corn borers in maize at "Perimetro de Rega do Mira" (Alentejo, Portugal). This methodology involves three stages: plant organisation in three homogeneous classes, based in the ear length; determination of a production model, based in the class "not attacked plants"; and determination of a loss model (loss functions). It is also presented the annual development of those species and the results of the application of the model, which provided general information on the losses caused by corn borers, in that year and in the area of the study.
