Sugar beet growing without ploughing. An environmentally friendly and economically efficient alternative for modern day agriculture

Four cultivation systems (conventional tillage with plough, conservation tillage with and without loosening, direct drilling) were studied in a long-term on-farm trial for their suitability for sugar beet production at 9 sites in Southern and Eastern Germany. Plant population, root yield and white sugar yield decreased slightly after conservation tillage and clearly after direct drilling. Sugar content and standard molasses loss showed only slight differences between soil tillage systems. Variable costs showed no modification by soil tillage, fix costs and labour costs decreased. The savings had only slightly influence on profitability of different soil tillage systems.
