Pigment content in cereal crops grown on copper polluted soil

Cereal species - ray (Secale cereale), wheat (Triticum aestivum) and two cultivars of barley spring (Hordeum distichum) and winter (Hordeum vulgare) were grown in pots in greenhouse conditions under copper stress. Concentrations of the metal (as a CuCl 2 solution) were 150, 250 and 400 mg.kg- 1 of soil. Chlorophyll (Chl a and Chl b) and carotenoids, extracted in 80% acetone were measured spectrophotometricaly wavelength 663, 645 and 452.5 nm. Results were compared with this of control plants. It is established that investigated plants show a different reaction to copper stress and changes in the pigment content depend on the copper concentration in the soil and the cereal species.
