A model experimental system was used to study the leaching of imazethapyr and its effect on the biological activity of two different soils. In calcareous chernozem imazethapyr migrated as follows: down to 15 cm for imitated rainfall of 50mm, 25 cm for 100mm, and along the entire investigated depth in the case of 150 mm. In light gray forest soil imazethapyr is rather less mobile: 5 cm for 50mm imitated rainfall, 10 cm for 10mm, and down to 15 cm for 150 mm. For 50 mm imitated rainfall a residual quantity of 0.2 ppm was established in the 0-5 cm layer or 65% of the applied dose. Concentrations of 1000n and over 50n imazethapyr reduced the quantity ofbacteria and fungi, and catinomycetes by 50% respectively. The total biological activity, amonifying activity and dehydrogenase activity were not affected by the concentration of the applied herbicide for both soils.
