Effects of plane of nutrition on the composition of milk from cows of different beta-lactoglobulin phenotype

Effects of nutrition on milk composition for cows of differing P-lactoglobulin (beta-Lg) phenotype were determined using cross-over experiments in Spring and Summer. Identical-twin Friesian cows, homozygous for either beta-Lg variant A (n=8) or B (n=8), were subjected to restricted grazing or ad libitum grazing plus supplementary concentrate. Preliminary results suggest an interaction between the effects of phenotype and nutrition on milk composition. In Spring, milk protein composition (protein per cent and non-casein N per cent) of beta-Lg BB cows varied more widely under contrasting nutritional regimes than beta-Lg AA cows (P less than 0.05). No interactions were observed in Summer. This information will be important if protein variants are to be used for selecting cows of defined milk protein profile.
