Efficiency and quality of goat milk of white breed in the region of Eastern Poland

The investigations concerned milk efficiency, chemical composition and content of trace elements in goat milk over three successive lactation periods. Control of milking capacity included 40 goats of white improved breed kept in the Experimental Station of the Agricultural University in Lublin. It was proved that milk efficiency increased in the second lactation period by 47 per cent and by 55.6 per cent in the third as compared to the first. The duration time was congenial and varied from 275 to 279 days. The contents of the basic components of milk were as follow: 3.44-4.74 per cent fat, 2.99-3.03 per cent proteins, 4.41-4.48 per cent lactose, and 11.63-12.10 per cent dry mass. Concurrently, in the same milk samples, the heavy metals content (Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe) was determined. Moreover, throughout the time of research some differences in the toxic elements content were shown with their prevalence recorded at the beginning of the lactation time. The standard contents of Cu and Zn for pasteurized milk were not exceeded, yet their amount increased. The levels of Fe and Mn, however, did not manifest any change during lactation period. Goat milk coming from the eastern region of Poland is considered to be a full value, "pure" food product.
