Avian tuberculosis was rediagnosed on chicken in 1997 (in a holding in Tartu district), confirmed by results of Gen-Probe, PCR and biotest on chicken. It's the third registered case of chicken tuberculosis in Estonia since 1968 (previous two cases were registered in 1995). Swine and bovine mycobacteriosis caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria are widely distributed in Estonia. 220 samples from swine, bovine, chicken, milk and eggs were bacteriologically examined and 16 cultures of mycobacteria were isolated. 7 of 16 were identified as belonging to M. avium complex (MAC) by DNA sequence analysis (Gen-Probe Inc.)
