An effect of lime fertilizers on vegetables

In 1996-1997, field trials were performed on strongly acid loamy sand in order to study the effect of different lime fertilizers on common beet, carrot and cabbage. The applicationrate of lime fertilizers was 5 t/ha CaCO3. The lime fertilizers applied to soil in spring increased the yield of common beet by 65-70 per cent and that of carrot by 40-42 per cent. Due to the aftereffect of lime fertilizers, the beet and carrot yields increased 22-36 per cent and 11-15 per cent, respectively. There was no significant differences in the effect of different lime fertilizers on the yield. The application rate of 5 t/ha CaCO3 was not sufficient for the given soil for a longer period. Re-acidifaction of soil developed fast and the contents of calcium and magnesium decreased. Liming had to be repeated. Liming did not affect the yield of cabbage the plants of which had been grown on neutralised peat medium. The yields of both limed and non-limed variants were high - on the average of two years approximately 8.1-8.7 kg per m (2). Liming with oil-shale ash and dolomite and limestone meal mixture increased plausibly the sugar content in carrot and reduced the nitrate content in carrot and cabbage
