Dynamics of live weight and backfat depth of sows depending on the energy and protein intake

The effect of the metabolizable energy and crude protein in the ration on the reproduction of sows was investigated. Sows under test were kept at the three different energy and protein levels. Metabolizable energy and crude protein levels in the rations of pregnant sows tested were as follows: low (below 30 MJ resp 250 g), medium (30...35 MJ resp 250...325 g) and high (above 35 MJ resp. 325 g). The three levels used in feeding lactating sows were: low (below 65 MJ resp. 800g), medium (65...70 MJ resp. 800...900 g) and high (above 70 MJ resp. 900 g). Metabolizable energy and crude protein content in the ration consumed had an effect on the live-weight and backfat depth dynamics of sows as follows: Metabolizable energy intake had no direct influence on the total and extrauterine weight gain of sows during pregnancy. The metabolizable energy content of the diet had an effect on the extrauterine gain until the 90th day of pregnancy. Extrauterine gain in the last month of pregnancy was not related to metabolizable energy intake.
