CONNEL (1978), who examined several hypothesis concerning species richness or diversity, reduced them to only 6 hypothesis which fall into 2 general categories: i. non-equilibrium, and ii. equilibrium systems. Shallow water coral reefs have been described as being non-equilibrium systems, where competitive exclusion is prevented by frequent disturbances as predicted by the intermediate disturbance hypothese. The hypotheses suggest that the highest diversity is maintained at intermediate scales of disturbance. Literatures on two types of disturbances, i.e. abiotic (tidal exposure, wave action, sedimentation) and biotic (grazing), which can affect near surface coral diversity, are reviewed in the light of the intermediate disturbance hypotheses
