The cultivars of taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) are either diploids with 28 or triploids with 42 chromosomes. karyomorphological studies in diploid and triploid taro revealed chromosome morphological differences which appear to provide a cytological basis for plant morphological differences among the morphotypes and throw light on the probable pattern of intraspecific karyotype evolution within this species complex. Meiosis is normal in diploids and highly irregular in triploids. The overall chromosome situation to date strongly suggest that X = 7 as the basic number of the species and that the 2n = 28 forms are functional diploids of alloploid origin evolved from the ancestral 2n = 14 taxa in the distant past.
