Physiological response of taro to moisture stress

Eddoe Type colocasia plantsgrown under 100% (T1), 50% (T2) and 25% (T3) soil moisture saturation, the relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll; total sugars, proline content and membrane stability of leaf tissue were measuredat monthly intervals over the five months crop growth period. The plants grown at 25% soil moisture saturation (T3) showed maximum reduction in RWC, chlorophyll, sugar and membrane stability with an accumulation of maximum proline in the leaf tissue. Soil moisture at 25% saturation was found to be the adverse level at which leaf water status decreased leading to tissue dehydration, damaging of soil membranes and chlorophyll loss which were attributed for reduction in growth and yield of the crop.
