Over a period of last decades Lithuanian indigenous cattle were rapidly replaced by mainly black-and-white and red breeds, there still remained cattle with qualities and colour characteristics to native populations. In Lithuania most indigenous cattle are either light-grey or white-backed. Farmers value indigenous cattle for their hardiness, good character, productivity and other positive characteristics. Conservation of indigenous cattle started with the foundation of relict-genofond herds, organization of milk-recording, cryopreservation of semen, pure breeding and determination of genetic distances and other biological and farming qualities.
