This is the report on rare birds in Latvia prepared by the Latvian Rarities Committe. Records judged by the committee cover the period 1996-97 together with one older record from 1995. Details for each accepted record are: year, locality, district code (see Fig. on p. 2), followed by number of birds (if more than one), sex and age (if known), date(s), type of record if bird trapped, photographed, or found dead (and where specimen is stored), and names of observes.
