Anti-inflammatory principles of the leaves of Persea americana Mill.

The ethanol extract of the dried leaves of Persea americana Mill exhibited anti-inflammatory activity when tested by the carrageenan-induced edema method, inhibiting the inflammation of about 76 percent at a dosage of 3 g/kg body weight. From the hexane and ethylacetate fractions of the extract was obtained after a bioactivity-directed fractionation scheme, an isolate HV sub 6b which inhibited inflammation by about 66 percent at a dosage of 0.2 g/kg body weight and also reduced platelet aggregation induced by CaCl2. Structure elucidation techniques employing infrared, `H and sup (13) C nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy indicated that isolate HVsub 6b was avocadene [I] or 16-heptadecene-1, 2, 4-trial. From the ethylacetate fraction was also obtained another isolate E3 sub 2a which inhibited carrageenan-induced inflammation by 37 percent at same dosage.
