Ti plants or Cordyline terminalis (Family Agavaceae) are considered the king of Tropical Foliage Plants and have been chosen as one of the priority crops for the Integrated Ornamental Horticulture Research and Development Program of the Department of Science and Technology because of their color, hardiness for indoor use and as landscaping material, and potential for export as cutfoliage or live plants. In order to produce new varieties with novel or improved characteristics the soonest possible time, artificial breeding was undertaken while studying the floral biology of three accession that flowered at the same time. Flower opening, stigma receptivity, pollen shedding, and longevity of individual flowers and the inflorescence itself were observed. Non-fruit setting in all self-pollinated flowers is indicative of self-incompatibility while the very high percentage of fruit setting (up to 100 percent) in cross-pollinated flowers shows that the different accessions used in reciprocal breeding were highly cross- compatible. Fruit development, number of seeds produced per berry, germination time and percentage of germination were also noted. The different hybrids produced are currently being evaluated for their suitability as pot plant, landscaping material, or cutfoliage crop in terms of plant size, color, leaf production, and reaction to pests and diseases. Leaves of hybrids with potential for cutfoliage will be screened for postharvest life and shipment trials
