Response of Phil 8839 to drought

The study was conducted to determine the response of Phil 8839 to different levels of water stress. The variety was planted in half drums and subjected to 12, 24 and 36 days of water stress at 1, 3, 5 and 7 months after planting. After water stress, cane plants were watered regularly up to six weeks before harvest. Plant height, leaf length, leaf width, number of leaves, number of tillers and number of dry leaves were significantly affected by water stress regime, one month after planting [MAP]. Plant height and stalk diameter were significantly affected by water stress regime, 1 MAP. Stalk diameter was significantly highest at 1 MAP but comparable to 3 and 5 MAP. The number of leaves was highest at 3 MAP, the tillering stage, but decreased at 1, 5 and 7 MAP. The weight of dry leaves similarly decreased at 5 and 7 MAP. Soil moisture at harvest had a positive correlation with plant height at 12 and 24 days moisture level, but negatively correlated with weight of dry leaves at 12 days moisture level. Phil 8839 can be considered drought-tolerant because it gave the lowest weight of dry leaves as water stress increases while stalk diameter was significantly bigger at harvest. The number of tillers, number of stalks, stalk weight, brix and total leaf area were not significantly affected by water stress regime
