Preliminary investigation of the efficacy of entomopathogenic nematodes against grubs in sugarcane

Two native isolates of entomopathogenic nematodes, Heterorhabditis and Rhabditis were significantly infective to the following species of white grubs of sugarcane, Leptdiota, L. Irrorata and Anomala. In the glass jar test, mortality of white grubs increased when the time of exposure to nematodes lengthened from 3 to 8 days. Increasing the application dosage from 500 to 1000 nematodes/ml of Heterorhabditis or Rhabditis also resulted to corresponding rise of infected white grubs. Results of the test in potted sugarcane corroboratively indicated significant high proportion of infected while grubs after 7 days exposure to dosage of 500 or 1000 nematodes/ml. The number of infected grubs becomes higher when the exposure time to nematodes was extended to 28 days
