Effects of different feeds on the population growth and protein content of mysids (Metasiriella kitaroi)

Mysids collected in brackishwaterr ponds stocked in large basins (16 mg/l) reproduced after one week with a population count of 38 mg/l in rice bran, 63 mg/l in fish meal, 78 mg/l in acetes and 18 mg/l in chicken manure. Population in tanks in trial 1 was 103 mg/l in rice bran, 38 mg/l in fish meal, 37 mg/l in acetes, and 51 mg/l in chicken manure and in trial 2, 91 mg/l in rice bran, 125 mg/l in fish meal, 119 mg/l in acetes and 733 mg/l in chicken manure. Results showed that variation in population count was evident in each sampling period for each treatment. There was a decline in the population at harvest in all treatments. Analysis of variance on population showed no significant difference between treatments (P0.05) and significant difference between trials (P less than .05). The protein content of mysids during the mid culture period was 41.09 percent in rice bran; 26.75 percent in fish meal; 32.73 percent in acetes; and 51.33 percent in chicken manure. In tanks, protein content obtained was 59.62 percent in rice bran; 47.19 percent in fish meal; 54.19 percent in acetes; and 51.10 percent in chicken manure. Trial 2 resulted in a protein content of 72.32 percent in rice bran; 63.19 percent in fish meal; 44.42 percent in acetes; 64.67 in chicken manure. A highly significant correlation between population and salinity during trial 1 (P less than 0.00) was observed. However, there was low correlation between population and NH3-N in basins (P less than 0.004)
