Antirheumatism activity of the total alkaloids from the stem of Makabuhay (Tinospora rumphii, Boerl., Fam. Memispermaceae)

The purpose of the study was to determine the antirheumatism activity of the total alkaloids from the stem of makabuhay which is reputed to have medicinal value among the rural folk. The investigation of the semipurified alkaloids from the plant was determined by chemical and instrumental methods of analysis and the biological assay to measure its anti-inflammatory activity. Procedure of the laboratory experiment includes: preliminary tests to detect the presence of alkaloids, extraction and purification of the alkaloids using physical and chemical tests, use of thin layer chromatography and infrared spectroscopy, and biological tests to measure the antirheumatism property through anti-inflammatory test of the semipurified alkaloids using female rats (CR:RAR-SD) as animal specimen. The major findings were: 1.) the Culvenor Fitzgerald field method of alkaloidal screening gave positive results with Mayer's and Dragendorff's reagent; 2.) the collected alkaloids were yellowish crystalline substance with pleasant odor and bitter taste; and 3.) alkaloidal extract from makabuhay produced significant protection against edema formation at dose 125 mg/kg giving 14.34 percent protection whereas the doses 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg did not produce any anti-inflammatory activity
