Antimicrobial activity of the total alkaloids from the bark of mahogany (Swietenia majogani Jacq. Fam Meliaceae)

The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of the total alkaloidal extract of Mahogany bark on the growth of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and Trichophyton metagrophytes. Mahogany is cultivated as a source of lumber. A native of West Indies, mahogany is reputed to contain medicinal properties and used as antipyretic, tonic, and astringent. Procedures of the experiment include: collection and preparation of materials for preliminary test; extraction and partial purification; physical and chemical methods of analysis; thin layer chromatography and FTIR spectrophotometer used in the investigation of the alkaloidal extracts; antimicrobial activity determination through the cylinder plate method using chloramphenicol as control against S. aureus, tetracycline against E. coli and clotrimazole against C. albicans and T. mentagrophytes (fungi). The major findings of the study were: 1.) the mahogany bark consists of four secondary alkaloidal amine; 2.) the alkaloidal extractives obtained by continuous extraction is almost pure as indicated by its melting point range; and 3.) the alkaloidal extractive did not show antimicrobial activity against bacteria and the yeast but had activity against T. mentagrophytes which is the fungus activity commonly causing scalp, nail and skin infection
