Soil columns are being used by many researchers to evaluate the fate of agricultural chemicals and salinity causing salts in soils. With previous and continuing work, researchers have not identified a uniform set of procedures for the use of soil columns in laboratory studies. In this paper a detailed method is described for constructing low-cost soil columns using PVC pipes. A procedure was developed for packing different distributed soil layers in the columns by tamping the soil. Uniformity and reproducibility of column packing were determined by conducting tests of salt equilibrium, drainage porosity, and moisture content. It was concluded that the columns so prepared and used gave meaningful results.
