State of the art report on Philippine land mammals

Heaney et.al. listed 165 species of land mammals belonging to 19 Orders known to occur in the Philippines. Seven species were considered introduced/commensal forms, while another 60 are native to the archipelago and at least one other island outside its territory. The remaining 98 species or nearly three-fifths are endemic, including three undescribed new species. The current count of the Philippine mammal fauna recognizes 182 species belonging to 86 genera, of which 21 are endemic (25 percent). Native species account for 35 percent (64 species), while non-native species remain at seven species. One hundred and eleven species (60 percent) are endemic, which includes 17 new species yet to be described. The overall decline in population is mainly attributed to habitat destruction of remaining forests. Nearly one-third of the total assemblage is still indeterminate or lacks data while another one-fifth are either endangered or highly vulnerable to extinction. The greatest research gap is due to the lack of field surveys to provide necessary basic data needed to assess the habitat requirements and conservation status of each species
