Studies on irrigation scheduling in spring sown sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

A field experiment "Effect of irrigation scheduling on the spring sown sunflower" was carried out at Post Graduate Agricultural Research Station (PARS), University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during spring 1994. The main purpose of this study was to investigate schedule of irrigation for spring sunflower and their effect on yield and other agronomic components in sunflower. Irrigation scheduling comprised of application of either 6 or 8 irrigation with an interval of 7 or 14 days covering early or late growth stages. The plant population was kept constant during these studies. Maximum Plant height (173.3 cm) was recorded in treatment (T4) and lowest in (T1) (156.2 cm) which was also reported by Karami (1977) and Muhammad (1991). As regards head diameter it was highly significant and recorded maximum (13.73) as in T4 among the treatments. Maximum number of filled achenes/head (788.3) were recorded in T4 where eight irrigation were applied with an interval of seven days. These results are in line with those of Jana et al. (1982) and Muhammad (1991). A significantly higher 1000-achene weight (55.2 g) was recorded in T4 which was attributable towards regular and adequate water supply. The results revealed significantly higher yield (2.99 t/ha) in T4 where eight irrigations were given at the interval of seven days. Maximum oil contents (41.75%) was recorded in T4 where irrigation scheduling comprised of 8 irrigation with an interval of 7 days. The conclusion was that the sunflower crop in spring may be grown with eight irrigations i.e. the first irrigation after 14 days of seeding and others with an interval of 7 days.
