Relationship between abomasal ulcer and various disorders in dairy cattle

Fifty-one Holstein-Friesian cows, two to 13 years old, suffering from various disorders were investigated for the occurrence of abomasal ulcers. The disorders were classified into: traumatic reticulitis, downer cow syndrome, locomotor disorders and abomasal displacement. The abomasal ulcer was examined macroscopically and histopathologically and the incidence, distribution and characteristics of abomasal ulcer and its relationship with various disorders were investigated. Abomasal ulcers were observed in 87.5 percent, 50 percent, 23.8 percent and 81.3 percent of animals with traumatic reticulitis, downer cow syndrome, locomotor disorders and abomasal displacement, respectively. The rate of occurrence of ulcer in the fundus was 94.7 percent and 78.6 percent in animals with abomasal displacement and traumatic reticulitis, respectively, while the rate of occurrence in the pyolcus was 80 percent and 70.6 percent in locomotor disorders and downer cow syndrome, respectively. Most of the ulcers observed in animals with traumatic reticulitis were vagal ulcers. Severe distention of the abomasal wall in animals with abomasal displacement could have predisposed the animals to ulcer formation
