Three economically important dye plants in southern Philippines

The botanical characteristics of three dye plants that are economically important to the Ubos, an ethnic tribe of South Cotabato, Mindanao, Philippines, were described. These plants included nino (Morinda bracteata Roxb.), Kinarum (Diospyrus pauciflora C.N. Rob.) and dilau (Curcuma longa L.). Their use for dyeing abaca fibers and related materials, including their collection, methods of dye extraction and application were outlined based on structured and unstructured interviews of tribal healers and leaders in five communities at the Lamfugon-Tasaday area, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. The ecology of the species, their economic contribution to the Ubo tribe, conservation status and potential for wide-scale economic utilization were discussed
