Preliminary studies on phages of soft rot erwinias (Erwinia carotovora)

Bacteria belonging to the genus Erwinia are the causal agent of soft rot a very important disease of several economically significant crops in Poland. The obligate parasites of bacteria are their viruses-bacteriophages. The specificity of bacteriophage lysis offers a practical means for identification and differentiation of bacterial pathogens. In 1995 we isolated 26 bacteriophages from 8 different parts in Poland. They were characterized on the basis of their origin, plaque morphology on the indicator strain. Therefore in the present state we were able to use phage sensitivity to differentiate isolates only from onion (C-1-C-8). There was no correlation between bacteriophages and bacteria isolated from the same material. Potato isolates of bacteriophages from different places in the country show a lot of similarities: the same indicator strain, plague morphology and specificity. Our bacteriophages were useful either in the preliminary study on the effect of chitosan on phages infectivity
