Economic reforms have brought about positive changes in the organization of trade and services in rural areas. Between 1991 and 95 the number of shops increased from 85.000 to 98.000. The number of facilities rendering catering and certain other services to the population grew in a similar way. Studies conducted by the Institute of Agriculture and Food Economy in 1996 showed that 92 of villages had at least one shop selling food, 30 had a general store, and 34 a kiosk selling newspapers
