During three years, wheat phenological development stages were determined frequently in a total of 13 plots, sown in Central Portugal. Thermal time, accumulated global radiation, and photothermal time were compared for their ability to predict anthesis and maturity. Thermal time predicted anthesis and maturity with standard errors (SE) of 5.4 days and 2.8 days, using calculated base temperatures of 4.6+-1.8 C and 12.1+-2.1 C, respectively. Before anthesis, accumulated global radiation was superior to both approaches and predicted anthesis with a SE of 2.0 days. A linear function of temperature and photoperiod was also used to predict anthesis, but SE was 4.1 days in this case
