In this paper, the authors present the factors and the facts of the 1995/1996 floods that occurred in the Tagus river. Although for short durations the rainfall return period was far from exceptional, nevertheless it was 1000 years for the three months November to January. The maximum recorded flow of 6672 m3 s-1 owes the modestry of its value to the Spanish reservoirs storage capacity
