[The deer of the Tapada da Mafra: What future? [Portugal]]
1996
Afonso, S.A. | Oom, M.M. | Mathias, M.L.
In this work data are discussed on the present status of the red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) population of Tapada Nacional de Mafra, based on recent demographical and morphological studies, as well as on the availablepublished information from 1939 onwards, the year of their introduction in the area. Considering that the founder animals (4 males and 7 females) originated from the same population (Quinta da Torre Bela), and that all the following introductions were not well succeeded, we are dealing today with a closed population including a small number of animals, facing consequently a loss of genetic variability. Taking into account all the available data, the potential role of environmental (e.g. nutritional) and genetic (e.g. increase of homozygoty) factors in the antlers design and tines development is discussed
