Soil Gamasida (Acari) of young Scots pine forests in the region polluted by the "Lubon" chemical factory near Poznan

The soil Gamasida of young Scots pine forests in the region of the "Lubon" chemical factory near Poznan, was investigated. The polluted plots were situated at distances of 1,5 km (plot 1), 3,8 km (plot 2) and 8 km (plot 3) from this factory, and a control plot (0) was chosen 14 km from the pollution source. The concentration of pollution in these forests increased towards the pollution source. A high concentration of pollutants reduced the density and species number of Gamasida, while low concentrations increased the species number of these mites. Among Gamasida, the folowing categories of species were distinguished: sensitive to air pollution (Zercon peltatus, Hypoaspis praesternalis, Leioseius bicolor and Veigaia nemorensis), tolerant of this pollution (Pergamasus runciger and Hypoaspis aculeifer) and sensitive to a high concentration, but tolerant of small concentrations of this pollutant (Amblyseius obtusus and Pergamasus crassipes)
